"When my neurosurgeon suggested using the PoleStar scans during my brain surgery I really investigated all the options out there. Intraoperative MRI made a lot of sense to me. I felt it was much safer and gave the doctor the accuracy and precision needed for my brain surgery. I understand that the tumor's location and very small size would have made it very difficult to map out in the traditional way."
Karen Miksell had a history of seizures, weakness on the left side and disrupted vision. After years of faulty diagnoses and failed treatments, she was accurately diagnosed with oligodendroglioma, a tumor in the brain. All her symptoms subsided following the resection of the tumor using intraoperative MRI.

"I work at UMDNJ in the physical plant so I was aware of the project to renovate the operating room before they got the PoleStar. Once they found the tumor, I held off my operation for a month for two reasons: one to attend my daughter's first communion and two to have the operation done with the PoleStar. Dr. Schulder, my neurosurgeon, said it would be a great help with the precision of the operation and I wanted to make sure I was getting the newest and best treatment for my surgery."
"When I woke up Dr. Schulder let me know that they had gotten everything out. In fact, he told me that during the operation, they used the PoleStar to locate an extra bit of tumor they weren't expecting. Apparently they might not have found it otherwise. Hearing that validated my choice to wait until the PoleStar was available to have my surgery."
Kevin McGuire is a 36-year-old supervisor in the engineering department at New Jersey Medical School who had a seizure at work. He was found to have a right frontal brain mass that biopsy showed to be a low-grade (benign) tumor. Functional MRI confirmed that areas of the brain responsible for movement or speech were distant from the mass. Surgery with the PoleStar was carried out with complete resection of all tumor visualized on MRI. Mr. McGuire was treated with chemotherapy known to be highly effective for his type of tumor, and a recent MRI showed no tumor growth. He has been working full-time without difficulty.
